While WebP is ideal for web delivery, many desktop applications and older graphic tools require PNG. Converting to PNG provides wide compatibility while keeping transparent backgrounds intact. If you need smaller file sizes instead of transparency, use the WebP to JPG converter (note that converting to JPG is lossy and not guaranteed to be smaller for simple graphics). Why do PNG files often weigh more than WebP?
WebP achieves high compression efficiency through predictive block coding and lossy quantization. When exported to PNG, the rendered pixel array is stored using lossless DEFLATE compression. Because PNG adds no lossy reduction, output PNG files are often larger in bytes than the source WebP. Compare the actual output size; if you need smaller files rather than transparency, consider adjusting dimensions or formats.

Frequently asked questions
Is image quality lost when converting WebP to PNG?
No. The conversion from WebP to PNG is lossless relative to the source WebP. However, it cannot restore visual quality or high frequencies that were already discarded when the image was originally encoded as lossy WebP.
Does this tool preserve transparent backgrounds?
Yes. WebP transparency (alpha channel) is carried over directly into 32-bit RGBA PNG output. Transparent areas remain transparent and are never flattened onto white or black.
Can I convert animated WebP files?
No. This utility is built for static images and rejects animated WebP files (extended RIFF ANIM/ANMF chunks) to prevent incomplete frame extractions. Use a specialized video or GIF tool for animated sequences.
Can I batch convert multiple WebP files and download a ZIP?
